Ministerial, provincialMunicipal-level key discipline, bases for master&doctor degree, postdoctoral research station.

Thanks to the caresupport of professor Ziwei Du, our department was established in April,1990 with the hold of professor Qiang Huang. Our department growsexceeds through 20 years of hard workwith joint effort from professor Qiang Huang, Qing Lanother staffs, it is developing rapidly in clinic, teaching,research. At the time we keep in contact with colleagues both at homeabroad, thus layed an important foundation in the academic circles. In recent five years the department has been continuously expandeduntil now covered 60 beds (including 10 beds in the aminar flow rooms of NICU)about 70 medical workers (including 4 seniors, 6 advanced, 3 doctors8 postgraduates).

“To achieve the optimal effect with minimally invasive procedure” is the development direction of minimally invasive surgery,also act as the purpose of our department. Department has the level of the worlds leading neurosurgery navigation systemneuronavigator-guided keyhole technique has been used routinely for surgery. neuroendoscopy assisted keyhole operation is another featured item in our departmentacted as support tools of minimally invasive neurosurgery. In recent years, intravascular catheterization, functional neurosurgery, intraoperative neurophysiological monitor are increasingly developed, the first deep brain stimu- lation (DBS) treatment of Parkinson disease has been applied for the first time in SuZhougot satisfactory effect. Blood Oxygen Level Dependent MR assisted neuronavigation, nerve fiber tracts (pyramidal tractoptic radiation) Diffusion tensor imaging neuronavigation, these techniques effectively improved the accuracysecurity of the operation, thus filled the blank of our city. Non-natives rates have raised to 19.17%, up from about 10% in the initial years.

Anatomy lab, neurosciences institute, brain tumor lab, SPF labs has been established on the back of our discipline, we also distributed cell biology laboratorymolecular biology laboratory. Based on Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Neuroregeneration, we could fully complied with the request for fundamental research. The fundamental&clinical research led by Professor Qiang Huang on glioma has yielded many positive results, which could represent advanced level in the world, the previous research has successively completed 9 National Natural Science Foundations, 300 related papers4 books on the subject of glioma have been published, at the same time our team has received 13 provincial awards on technology advancement, thus set us apart from this kind of research. In recent 3 years we undertake 4 research projects on National Natural Science Foundations, 3 items has been finished2 item are undertake on provincial level, our team participate in 2 National Science-technology Support Plan Projects during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period1 National High-tech ResearchDevelopment Projects (863), 1 National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), 1 National Science -technology Support Plan Projects during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period4 city-level national sciencetechnology program are under research. 1 first prize of national scientifictechnological progress of China National Nuclear Corporation, 1 Second Prize of Technology Progress of FuJian province, 1 third Prize of Technology Progress1 second Prize of Medical Technology Progress of JiangSu province, 1 second1 third Prize of Technology Progress of SuZhou province, 1 second1 third Prize of New Technology Introduction has been awarded. More than 50 related papers have been published (including 19 SCI papers)edited several books.

In the meantime of finishing clinical workscientific research, we alse attach great importance to the promotion of our superior technology, for more than 10 years we hold the national-level continuing education class on keyhole minimally invasive neurosurgery, over 500 physicians from various regions attended our educational programs, our technology has been developedspread gradually in more than a dozen provinces. The achievements have been shared during nationalinterna- tional conferencespublished 19 research papers in SCI journals. We successfully hosted the 3th nationwide middle-young age neurosurgeon Forumthe 7th worldwide minimally invasive neurosurgery convention, which was the first time world-class convention held in China, this reflect our popularity at homeabroad. Our department stresses the training for qualified personnel We have so far sent several fellows to Japan, GermanyU. S for the study of cerebrovascular disease, functional neurosurgerygene knockout technology, this obtained a good effect. Professor Qing Lan irregularly visitedstudied overseas, to obtain the latest trends at homeabroad. 8 doctoral students13 postgraduate students have been educated.

Department features

Our department has the worlds most advanced ZEISSLeica surgery micro- scope, neuronavigation, neuroendoscopy, neurophysiological monitoring system, stereotactic instruments, pressure-drilling system, CUSA, radiofrequency coblation, dual-band radiofrequency coblation, electrohydraulic multifunction surgical bed.

At present the surgery items we carry out are listed as followings: anterior&posterior circulation aneurysm clipping (including complex intracranial aneurysms), pituitary adenoma resection by single nostril transsphenoidal approach, surgery for meningioma in different locations, craniopharyngioma, CP angle tumor, pineal region tumors, brain stem tumor, spinal canal tumor, vascular malformation, intracranial arteriovenous malformation, glioma, metastatic tumor, craniocerebral injury, hyperten

-sion cerebral hemorrhage, intervertebral disc herniation,MVD for trigeminal neuralgiahemifacial spasm. The keyhole surgery number has reached to 2000. Intravascular interventional therapysurgeries guided by neuronavigation&neuro-

endoscope has been carried out in our daily work. The 4th grade operation rate has account for 25.8%.
