The Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University is a modernized general
teaching hospital founded in 1988 and invested by the General Corporation
of Nuclear Industry of China. It is also named as the General Hospital
of Nuclear Industry and the Sixth People's Hospital of Suzhou. In
Oct. 1992 the hospital established formal cooperation with the Public
Health Bureau of Paris and was officially named as "Sino-France
Friendship Hospital". The Medical Emergency Center for Radiation
Injury of Chinese Nuclear Industry, the Emergency Medical Center
for QinShan Nuclear Power Station, the Suzhou Traumatic and Emergency
Medical Center and the Institute of Neurology of Soochow University
are all located in the hospital. The hospital undertakes the teaching
task of Soochow University and takes on the professional training
for the staff in local hospitals and medical facilities attached
to the national nuclear industry organizations. The hospital has
been qualified as class A-in-Grade 3 (top grade) since 1995. It
has been appraised as the "Civilized Hospital" for two
times and has won the "Bethune's Cup" in the competition
organized by Suzhou municipality.
The hospital covers an area of 70000 m2 with floorage over 50000
m2 and provides with 589 beds. At present there are more than 831
staffs, including 683 medico-technical personnel. Among them over
61 hold senior professional titles, with 9 tutors for doctoral and
58 tutors for master postgraduates. The hospital consists of 30
clinical departments, 14 teaching and research divisions, 22 medico-technologic
auxiliary sections, which are mainly focused on specialties of cardio-cerebro-vascular
and peripheral vascular diseases, nuclear medicine, medical emergencies,
mini-invasive surgery, tumor and occupational diseases. There are
11 clinical research sections and laboratories on brain circulation,
brain metabolism, cell biology, molecular biology, brain tumor,
orthopedics peripheral vascular disease, thrombosis and hemostasis,
clinical nuclear medicine, experimental nuclear medicine, and clinical
immunology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Hematology and
Cardiovascular Medicine have been appointed as the ministerial or
municipal major medical subjects. The journal "General Practitioner"
has been sponsored and edited by the hospital.

The hospital is equipped with over 300 sets of novel medical instruments
e.g. medical linear accelerator, MRI, Artoscan-dedicated MRI, DSA,
GE X-ray machine-Prestige VH+ multi-purpose remote controlled R/F
system, whole-body X-CT, spiral X-CT, SPECT, dual head SPECT with
coincidence circuit (γ-Pet), various electric/fiberoptic flexible
endoscopes, arthroscope, high quality multifunctional anesthetic
machine, brain electrical activity mapping, electromyography and
evoked potentials equipment, color Doppler Ultrasound equipment,
large-scale automated blood biochemical analyzer, blood gas analyzer,
automated body plethysmography etc.
In addition to clinical work, medical and scientific research is
a major task of the hospital. The achievements from the basic and
clinical research on diagnosis and treatment of cerebral glioma,
spinal diseases, peripheral and cerebral vascular diseases have
been ranked as leading position both nationally and internationally.
Lots of large-scaled national/regional academic conferences have
been organized and hold there. More than 100 medical personnel from
all parts of the country have been trained and refreshed in this
hospital.
Since its establishment,the hospital has strengthened mutual contacts
and cooperation with many foreign countries and established academic
and scientific research communications with many universities, research
institutes and hospitals in France, Japan, USA etc. Up to now, 50
medical personnel have sent to France, Japan, and USA for postgraduate
training.
The medical task and service of the hospital covers the national
wide nuclear industrial organizations and the districts of Jiangsu,
ZheJiang provinces and six county-level cities under the jurisdiction
of Suzhou. The average annual number of outpatients and inpatients
of the hospital amount to 460000 and 10000 respectively. The hospital
is the major unit for local emergency service and the cure rate
for critical and severely illed patients has reached to 92%.
