The Department of Orthopaedics of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University was founded in 1988. Under the leadership of Professor Zheng Zugen and Professor Dong Qirong, it has developeda key discipline of the Ministry of Education, a key clinical specialty of Medicine in Jiangsu Province, a key clinical discipline of Osteology in Jiangsu Province, a clinical center of Orthopedics in Suzhou City and a clinical center of Osteoporosis in Suzhou City. It is the doctoral and masters degree awarding point and postdoctoral mobile station of Soochow University. In 2005, it took the lead in the construction of orthopedics subspecialization in Suzhou, and has been builtspine, joint, h and foot and trauma subspecialties, covering all fields of orthopedics, and completing the diagnosis and treatment of trauma, deformity, tumor, degeneration and other diseases. It is the vice chairman unit of the bone mineral salts and Osteoporosis Society of the Chinese Medical Association, the microsurgery branch of the Jiangsu Medical Association and the sports medicine branch of the Jiangsu Medical Association.
The department has a strong scientific research force, with more than 350 SCI papers and more than 100 Chinese series published. It presided over 1 key project subproject of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 34 National Natural Science Foundation, 13 Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, 4 key social development projects of Jiangsu Province, and more than 50 scientific research projects in Suzhou. It has won dozens of provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, among which "Basic and clinical research on posterior spinal transpedicle internal fixation" won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress. It has Jiangsu Applied Research Center of Physical and Medical Integration to Promote Elderly Bone Health, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Osteoporosis Diagnosis and Treatment Technology and Transformation, Institute of Osteoporosis of Soochow University, Suzhou Key Laboratory of Spinal Cord Injury Repair, Suzhou Key Laboratory of Peripheral Nerve Repair and Suzhou Key Technology Laboratory of Iron-mediated Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment.
At present, there are 19 chief physicians (including 6 professors), 24 deputy chief physicians (including 10 associate professors), 34 attending and resident physicians, 2 technicians, 1 scientific research assistant and 2 part-time professors (one national Jieqing and one outsting youth). It has a number of key medical talents in Jiangsu Province, key health talents in Gusu and provincial "333" project talents. There are 2 academic doctoral supervisors, 8 clinical doctoral supervisors and 25 master supervisors, of whom more than 20 once studied in Europe, America, Japan and Hong Kong. There are 78 doctors in this department, including 5 under 30 years old, 15 between 30 and 35 years old, 9 between 50 and 60 years old, and 3 over 60 years old. Educational composition: 31 doctoral students, 47 master students, no bachelor degreebelow. There are 210 beds and nearly 9,000 operations annually. At the same time, it undertakes the teaching work of graduate students and undergraduate students in Soochow University, and has trained more than 250 masters and doctoral students, which is the stardized training base for resident doctors in Jiangsu Province.
